Orlando Health is pleased to offer a unique music therapy internship experience.  Interns may choose between a pediatric specific internship or a joint internship spanning both the pediatric and adult populations.  The pediatric internship will be held at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children (OH/APH) and Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies (OH/WPH). The joint internship includes rotations at the Orlando Health Cancer Institute and Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). At OH/APH and OH/WPH, interns will work with pediatric patients in Hematology/Oncology, Intensive Care, General Pediatric, and NICU units. The joint internship will also include work with oncology and trauma patients as well as general adult inpatients. Please indicate on the application your choice of internship (joint or pediatric only).

Interns will have the opportunity to collaborate with multiple disciplines including rehabilitation therapy (speech, occupational, and physical therapy), nursing, physicians, child life specialists, psychologists, chaplains, and social workers.

Current Affiliated Schools

Students applying for an internship should be enrolled in one of the following schools to be eligible for consideration:

  • Florida State University
  • University of Miami
  • University of Georgia

Entry-level Requirements

Students are expected to demonstrate functional competencies with keyboard, guitar, voice, percussion, and improvisation prior to starting the internship. Students should have an awareness of common music therapy interventions in the medical setting and be open to diverse training experiences. Students will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of populations and ages. Within the application, students will need to have their academic director send a letter of eligibility for the internship.

Application Process

The music therapy internship is a six-month program with start dates in July and January. The application deadline is June 15th for the January start date and December 15th for the July start date. After receiving a completed application, you will be contacted about setting up an in-person or virtual interview, depending on your location. Interns will be required to complete a TB test, a background check, and required vaccinations prior to starting the internship. The intern will be responsible for any cost of those items. Practicum

Orlando Health Arnold Palmer and Orlando Health Winnie Palmer also provide dynamic training for music therapy practicum students. This practicum includes student observation and training opportunities with a variety of ages and populations. Students will see patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, pediatric intensive care unit, orthopedic/neurology unit, hematology/oncology units, cardiac intensive care unit, nephrology outpatient unit, and general inpatient pediatric units. Practicum students at an AMTA-approved program who are currently completing pre-internship clinical training are welcome to apply at any point in the year.
