Coral Candelario-Velazquez, MD, is a board-certified physiatrist who specializes in pediatric rehabilitation medicine with Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She specializes in treating patients with congenital neurological disorders and developmental disorders.

What Is a Pediatric Physiatrist?

Dr. Candelario-Velazquez is a pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, also known as a physiatrist, with a focus on whole person health, her goal for each patient is to help them maximize their independence, increase functionality, minimize or eliminate pain, and raise their quality of life.

After a thorough evaluation, a targeted, child-specific treatment plan is developed to help patients improve their physical and intellectual functional ability and expand and enhance their daily routine. This form of complex rehabilitation is a team effort, and Dr. Candelario-Velazquez calls upon the experience and expertise of other pediatric specialists as well as physical, occupational and speech-language therapists to progressively implement the plan based on the child’s abilities and needs. Depending on the child, this may be learning to perform activities such eating and bathing or communicating and thinking more effectively. For others, it may be better body control or use of a mobility device.

As part of the treatment plan, parents and caregivers also are provided education and training about how to provide care at home and plan ahead to develop a continuum of care for their child as they grow older and move into adult rehabilitative services, live on their own or some other arrangement.
