Bio
Dr. Charles Hughes is a board-certified pediatric otolaryngologist with Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. He specializes in medical and surgical care for conditions affecting the ear, nose and throat. With 35 years of experience, his expertise includes:
- Chronic allergies
- Ear infections
- Tinnitus
- Hearing loss
- Sinusitis
- Deviated septum
- Disorders related to voice, swallowing, balance and cranial needs
- Benign and malignant tumors
- Facial trauma; plastic and reconstructive surgical needs
- Head and neck conditions related to cancer, infectious disease, thyroid disease and nerve disorders
- Airway surgery
Dr. Hughes’ Training
Dr. Hughes earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and received his medical degree from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. He completed residencies in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and the
Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington, Texas. Dr. Hughes completed fellowships in otolaryngology/vestibular physiology and laryngology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and in pediatric otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Northwestern University / Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago.
He went on to receive a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Augusta State University in Georgia and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Georgia Regents University, also in Augusta. He graduated summa cum laude from both.
About Dr. Hughes
Dr. Hughes is board certified by American Board of Otolaryngology, and he also received a post-graduate global health certificate. He is a fellow of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Surgeons, Triological Society and American Association for Physician Leadership and a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.
For two years, Dr. Hughes was named one of Chicago’s Castle Connolly Top Doctors, and since 2011 he has been listed among the Best Doctors in America.
Dr. Hughes is a captain and senior medical officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and has earned many medals for his accomplishments. He received flight surgeon training from the Naval Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida, and Joint Professional Military Education in strategy, theater security and maritime operations from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Dr. Hughes serves as an adjunct professor of surgery at Uniformed Services University and Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He is an appointed professional liaison specialty officer and a past appointed U.S. Navy otolaryngology specialty leader consultant to the Surgeon General, both in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Hughes’ research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals and book chapters, and he has delivered presentations at national and international conferences.
Outside of work, he enjoys exercising and outdoor activities.

Why do some Orlando Health physicians not have a patient experience rating?
The Patient Satisfaction Rating is an average of all responses to the care provider related questions, shown above, from our nationally-recognized Press-Ganey Patient Satisfaction Survey. Patients that are treated in outpatient or hospital environments may receive different surveys, and the volume of responses will vary by question.
Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
The comments are submitted by patients and reflect their views and opinions. The comments are not endorsed by and do not necessarily reflect the views of Orlando Health.
Ratings may not be present for certain physicians of Orlando Health Physician Group and Orlando Health Physician Associates because:
- The physician has not yet met the minimum number of 30 patient satisfaction surveys to be eligible for display.
- They may be a researcher or type of provider that does not see patients.
- They may practice in a specialty or office that has not yet implemented the specified surveys used for these ratings.
