Orthopedic Options for Scoliosis and Spinal Problems

When your child has a spinal condition, you want to find the best care available. Fortunately, the Scoliosis Center at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children hosts one of the largest, most comprehensive spinal facilities of its kind in the southeastern United States. We treat most spinal conditions from birth to young adulthood, including cervical spine abnormalities, and all forms of scoliosis and kyphosis.

Your family will receive care from a multidisciplinary team of physical therapists, orthotists, pediatric neurosurgeons and spinal surgeons. All of our spinal surgeons are members of the Scoliosis Research Society, providing you with some of the most advanced techniques to treat and care for your child.

Conditions We Treat

  • Cervical spine abnormalities
  • All forms of scoliosis – congenital, idiopathic, infantile, juvenile, neuromuscular and syndromic
  • All forms of kyphosis, including congenital and Scheuermann’s Spondylolisthesis and spine trauma
  • Sports spine injuries and spine trauma

Comprehensive Treatment Options

Once visiting our center, you and your child will learn about the different treatment options we offer for their spinal condition. Our surgeons will counsel your family to determine the best course of action and care.

We want your child to be able to live their life to the fullest. That’s why we emphasize non-surgical treatments whenever possible. Options include bracing, casting and physical therapy. A growing child can often overcome minor spinal curvatures and deformities through these less invasive options, and avoiding the pain and rigor of surgery. Your child will also have access to leading physical rehabilitation approaches, including the Schroth Method. These exercises are designed to strengthen the spine and help your child acclimate to their posture and positioning.

However, if surgery is necessary your child will have access to a full spectrum of surgical procedures, such as growing instrumentation, casting techniques, standard spinal fusions, osteotomies and vertebral relection. We use the most advanced surgical techniques, including spinal cord monitoring to ensure optimal results and safety. After surgery, our Pediatric Rehabilitation Program specialists place emphasis on optimizing function through a combination of medications, physical modalities, therapies, adaptive equipment and assistive devices, orthotics (braces), prostheses and collaboration with other subspecialties to provide a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.

EOS Imaging System

The Center for Orthopedics is home to the EOS Imaging System, Central Florida’s first and only ultra-low radiation dose, 3D, full-body imaging technology for pediatric patients. Developed from Nobel Prize-winning technology, the system is designed to capture simultaneous bilateral long length images, full body or localized, of patients in a weight bearing standing position, providing a complete picture of the patient’s skeleton and eliminating the need for splicing together partial images. In our experience, we’ve found that 3D imaging of the full skeleton enables more informed diagnosis and treatment decisions. We also appreciate the system’s significantly reduced radiation dose, especially for our pediatric patients who need frequent imaging. The EOS Imaging System delivers only 1/20 of the radiation from a traditional X-ray, all in less than 4 minutes.
