Pediatric Interventional Cardiac Catheterization

The Power of Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization

With catheter-based intervention, your physicians are able to more easily diagnose and treat many complex pediatric heart problems. This approach reduces the need for a more invasive procedure. And because we have more than 20 years of pediatric interventional cardiology and perform over 285 cardiac catheterizations a year, your family has the confidence of knowing your child is receiving the best care.

If you and your physician decide cardiac catheterization is right for your child, you can expect the procedure to typically last less than 12 hours. In many cases, your child can go home the same day. The Heart Center at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children cardiologists perform a range of pediatric cardiac catheterization procedures, including:

  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent ductus arteriosis (PDA) closures
  • Valvuloplasty to repair:
    • Aortic stenosis
    • Pulmonary stenosis
  • Angioplasty
  • Transcatheter valve implants
  • Relief of pulmonary atresia
  • Relief of coarctation of the aorta
  • Stent placement
  • PDA stenting for single ventricle palliation
  • Interatrial stenting for relief of intact atrial septum for single ventricle palliation

Transcatheter Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) Closure

Babies are born with a natural connection between the pulmonary artery and the aorta called the ductus arteriosus. For most babies, the ductus arteriosus closes on its own within a few days or even hours after birth. In some babies, the connection remains open. This congenital heart defect is called a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). If your baby suffers from PDA, we offer a minimally invasive treatment option in partnership with Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.

Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Lab

Orlando Health Arnold Palmer is one of the first in the U.S. to have a Pediatric Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Lab. This space combines the traditional diagnostic functions of a full catheterization lab and the surgical resources of an operating room into one centralized hub. For your family, that means your physicians have access to equipment needed for any cardiac condition, including imaging technology for fluoroscopy, echocardiography and 3-D angiography.

In addition, our Cardiac Catheterization Lab is leading the way in innovating new technology and care approaches for the future. Every year, we participate in multicentered research trials to aid in the development of new interventional heart therapies and medical devices.
