Monica Barreto, PhD, is a pediatric psychologist with Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. She is experienced in the treatment and assessment of children and adolescents with a wide range of medical and neurological conditions.

Pediatric Psychological Care and Evaluation

Dr. Barreto provides psychological care for pediatric patients experiencing cognitive or behavioral problems as they relate to chronic illness. Children are referred to her by a physician or other professionals for psychological care when they display difficulty in the areas of medical non-adherence, sleep, adjustment to new diagnosis, behavior, socialization, or emotional control. These may be due to a medical condition, adjustment to disease or disorder, and/or stressors related to a variety of medical conditions.

Treatment and assessment for improving adherence to medical regimen, coping with chronic illness, and promoting adjustment to life-altering symptoms is provided for emotional, behavioral, and cognitive concomitant concerns such as:

  • Anxiety and related somatic symptoms
  • Depression
  • Trauma symptoms related to medical care or illness
  • Medical non-adherence
  • Increased distress
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Chronic pain
  • Executive functioning or developmental deficits

  • Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Behavioral activation
  • Behavioral therapy

  • Trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy

Dr. Barreto’s Training

Dr. Barreto received a master’s degree in applied developmental psychology from the University of Pittsburgh before earning another master’s degree in psychology and her PhD in clinical psychology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. She completed a predoctoral clinical psychology internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Yale School of Medicine, Yale Child Study Center in Connecticut.

Dr. Barreto is a member of the Society of Child and Adolescent Psychology, Society of Pediatric Psychology, and Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. She also is fluent in both English and Spanish.
