What Is Pediatric Neurology?
Neurological disorders in children may be present at birth (congenital) or develop as a child grows. Caregivers may notice signs of a neurological problem when their child begins to experience tremors, seizures, changes in reflexes, severe headaches, muscle rigidity or delays in developmental milestones. While all neurological disorders involve the brain, nerves or spinal column, symptoms vary depending on the condition.
Children with neurological disorders benefit greatly from proper diagnosis and treatment, which can make a difference in their quality of life today and tomorrow. Higgins cares for patients with many conditions, some of which include:
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Brain and nervous system tumors
- Childhood epilepsy and seizures
- Congenital brain anomalies including hydrocephalus
- Concussion and head injuries
- Developmental delays
- Headaches and migraines
- Neonatal seizures
- Neurocutaneous syndromes: Neurofibromatosis, Tuberous Sclerosis
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Metabolic diseases affecting the nervous system
- Multiple sclerosis
- Spina Bifida
- Tics and Tourette syndrome
