Health Lifestyles Program

Healthy Living for Every Child

Losing weight and leading a healthy lifestyle is difficult without the proper tools. But for children and families in Central Florida, The Healthy Lifestyles Program at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children offers a family-centered approach — led by Program Director Shaista Safder, MD, who is certified in obesity care and management.

Directed toward children and families who are at risk for obesity or have an elevated body mass index (BMI), this program concentrates on evaluating and managing the medical complications that correlate with obesity. With a proven track record of success, you have the confidence of knowing your family is in good hands.

Your Child’s Initial Screening

During your initial screening visit, a physician will complete a physical evaluation, review your child’s and family medical history, and address any gastrointestinal issues. Your physician may also request that your child have labs or imaging studies performed.

Along with these tests, you’ll have a discussion about the six-week, Healthy Lifestyles Program and what the expectations are for parent and patient. If your child is deemed an appropriate candidate, the physician will refer your child to the program, which begins pending authorization from insurance.

Patients who meet the following criteria may qualify for the program:

  • Ages 5 to 17
  • BMI for age greater than or equal to 85th percentile
  • Willing to commit to six weekly appointments

During clinic visits, the patient and family will meet with a dedicated team of specialists — including a gastroenterologist, sports medicine physician and registered dietitian — to develop an individualized plan and track progress toward achieving goals. The dietitian will provide comprehensive education on healthy eating habits. Referrals may be made to Sports Medicine, Pulmonology or Endocrinology based on the child’s individual needs.

For families that qualify, Saturday morning sessions are available at our facility with our Healthy Lifestyle Team.
